My Journey to Middle Earth – Day 1
Travel Nightmare
Travel Nightmare: How a Mysterious Ticket Suspension Cost Us Our Fiji Plans
We were supposed to be on a plane to Fiji, starting our long-anticipated trip to New Zealand with a 14 hour beach layover ion Fiji. Instead, we found ourselves stuck in an infuriating loop of miscommunication between airlines and travel agencies, watching our Fiji layover slip away due to a ticketing fiasco no one could explain.
The Problem: Suspended Tickets with No Warning
As we arrived at the airport, confident and excited for our trip, we were blindsided by an issue we had no idea existed—our tickets were suspended. WestJet, our first airline, had no explanation and directed us to Expedia, where we originally booked. Expedia had no record of any issues but could see that Sarah and Xander’s tickets had been suspended, though mine was somehow still fine. They told us to contact Fiji Airways, which was handling the next leg of our journey.
Fiji Airways? No clue. They told us to go back to Expedia.
The Runaround Begins
Now stuck in an endless corporate loop, I decided to get Expedia on chat while calling Fiji Airways at the same time. After much back and forth, Fiji Airways finally admitted that the charges for our tickets had been reversed due to a fraud claim.
Here’s the thing: We did have a fraud issue shortly after buying our tickets, but we worked with the bank to resolve it immediately. We even reached out to Expedia to confirm our reservations were still intact—and they said everything was fine. Even stranger, about a month later, we unexpectedly received a full refund. It seemed odd, but we again confirmed with Expedia that our reservations were still valid, Fiji airlines showed our reservations and flight confirmation active, WestJet too showed everything active.
False Reassurance, Right Until the Airport
Expedia continued sending us reminder emails, including a check-in notification the day before the flight. Everything seemed good to go. Until, of course, we arrived at the airport and found out that only two of our tickets were flagged as suspended. Mine was still active, which made zero sense.
At this point, Fiji Airways insisted that Expedia should have informed us. Expedia, in turn, said they had no notification from Fiji Airways—only records showing that every time we checked in on our reservations, everything appeared normal.
Why Couldn’t They Just Reinstate Our Tickets?
Here’s where things got even more frustrating: Our seats were still available. I asked if we could just pay again to reinstate them. Nope. Once suspended, they said, it was permanent. The only way to get on that plane was to rebook entirely, which—on short notice—was not an option.
Adding insult to injury, while standing at the counter arguing, we received another email telling us to hurry up and board. Then, a phone call from the gate—“Where are you? This is last call!”
We were in the system. Our seats were there. And yet, we were helpless to do anything about it.
The Fallout: Lost Time, Extra Costs, and No Fiji
Ultimately, we had to book a completely different flight through another airline. The cost? Double what we originally paid, thanks to the last-minute booking.
And the worst part? We lost our entire planned day in Fiji. A destination we were excited to experience for the first time—gone, just like that, due to an avoidable mistake that neither Expedia nor Fiji Airways would take responsibility for.
Who’s to Blame?
Expedia says Fiji Airways.
Fiji Airways says Expedia.
All we know is that someone dropped the ball, and the stress, lost money, and lost experiences made for an absolutely miserable start to our trip. Obviously we did NOT think we could get away with free flights but we checked with all parties again and again and again up, up until the day we were leaving and all appeared to be in order.
Someone—whether it was Fiji Airways, Expedia, or a combination of both—seriously messed up. And the stress it put on my family was beyond unacceptable.
Lesson learned: Always triple-check your reservations. And maybe, just maybe, avoid booking through a third party ever again. I know we will NEVER use Expedia again.
Stay tuned for the upcoming ACTUAL day to day journal entries coming tomorrow!
As always, you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. Embrace the adventure, cherish the memories, and I’ll catch you next time.

Unfortunately that is the state of air travel today. For a number of years now this has become an all too common occurrence. I tend to avoid air travel a lot nowadays because the stress and anxiety is just not worth it. I’m glad you were still able to ho on your trip and hopefully next time things will work out better 🙏
