Odds are we’ll be alright

Sometimes inspiration shows up in the most ordinary places.

For me, today, it was while driving to pick up my son.

I had YouTube Music playing on random, just letting whatever came up next fill the quiet of the drive. One of those songs came on that makes you pause for a second and actually listen to the lyrics instead of letting it fade into the background.

The song was “Odds Are” by the Barenaked Ladies

And the more I listened, the more I realized something simple but powerful. The song is absolutely right.

Odds are… we are going to be alright.

Now, that doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen. They do. Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. Jobs change. Plans fall apart. People struggle. Sometimes the road ahead looks a little darker than we hoped it would.

But if you step back and look at the bigger picture, most of the time things do work themselves out.

Not always the way we planned and/or not always the way we hoped…but they do.

Think about your own life for a second. Remember those moments where you thought everything was falling apart? The situations that kept you up at night, the problems that felt impossible at the time.

And yet here you are.

Still moving forward, still breathing, still writing the next chapter.

Somehow, piece by piece, life kept going. Solutions appeared. New opportunities showed up. People helped. Time passed. Perspectives changed.

The odds were quietly working in your favor the whole time.

That doesn’t mean we ignore the hard days. It just means we remember that hard days are not the whole story.

Sometimes all we need is a reminder that the sky has a funny way of clearing after the storm.

And sometimes that reminder comes from a random song on the radio while you’re driving to pick up your kid.

If you’re reading this and life feels heavy right now, please remember something important. You don’t have to carry it alone. Talk to someone. Reach out to a friend, a family member, or someone you trust. There are people who care about you more than you realize, and sometimes just saying the words out loud can make the load a little lighter.

Because even when it doesn’t feel like it in the moment, the odds are still quietly on your side.

And more often than not, things turn out okay.

And while we’re talking about struggling, it’s worth saying out loud that mental health is still something we don’t talk about nearly enough. The stigma is slowly getting better, but, especially for men, there’s still this old idea that we’re supposed to just tough it out, keep quiet, and carry everything ourselves. The truth is, none of us are meant to do that alone. Talking about what’s going on in your head doesn’t make you weak. If anything, it takes far more strength to say, “I’m not okay,” and reach out for help.

If you made it to the end, thank you for taking the time to read it. If no one reads this and I’m writing into the void, that’s ok too.

Remember, you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. Step outside, take a deep breath of the fresh air, feel the sun on your face, and remember the odds are usually in your favor, and I’ll catch you next time.

Much love,
Rob ❤️
