2024 Comes to a End

Reflecting On A Year of Change, Growth, and New Adventures

As 2024 comes to a close, I can’t help but look back and marvel at how much has changed in just 12 months. This year has been one of the most transformative of my life—one filled with leaps of faith, new beginnings, and rediscovering what truly matters.

One of the biggest shifts was leaving a toxic job that had drained me for far too long. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one. Moving to Vancouver Island felt like starting over, and it’s been everything I hoped for and more. Life here is different—calmer, more grounded, and filled with opportunity. I started a fantastic new job that has not only challenged me in all the right ways but also reminded me how good it feels to work in a positive environment surrounded by supportive people.

The island itself has been an endless source of inspiration. This summer, I explored more trails, parks, and beaches than I can count, covering more ground than any other summer I can remember. Every hike, every stunning view, and every quiet moment in nature reminded me of the importance of slowing down and being present. I even pushed myself to the limit on the toughest backpacking trip of my life (check out my blog about it here: A Lesson in Perseverance: Pushing Past the Limits), and it taught me so much about resilience and what I’m capable of when I refuse to give up. Each adventure has left me with unforgettable memories and a renewed appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me.

This year also marked the revival of my blog, something I’d been meaning to get back to for a long time. Writing these posts has been a deeply therapeutic process, allowing me to reflect on my journey, my adventures, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. It’s become an incredible creative outlet, giving me a chance to express my thoughts and find clarity in the chaos of life. More than that, it’s been a source of motivation—not just for myself but hopefully for others who read along. Having this space to share my experiences has been a reminder of the power of connection and storytelling, and I’m so grateful for it.

2024 was also the year I turned 40. It’s a milestone that, I’ll admit, came with mixed emotions, but mostly it’s given me perspective. Life really is too short to spend it stuck in places or situations that don’t bring you joy. Hitting 40 reminded me that it’s never too late to make a change, try something new, or chase your dreams.

Speaking of dreams, this was also the year I finished writing my first book—a goal I’ve had for as long as I can remember. Not only did I write it, but I also had the courage to put my work out into the world. That part? Terrifying. But also incredibly rewarding. Sharing my world, my characters, and my stories with others has been an adventure all its own, and it’s only just beginning.

Another thing I’m incredibly grateful for this year is how close Sarah and I have become. Our relationship is stronger than ever, and I feel so fortunate to have her by my side through all of life’s ups and downs. Xander, too, has grown so much—both literally and figuratively. As he approaches the preteen years, I’m constantly amazed by the kind, thoughtful, and clever young man he’s becoming. Watching him grow has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited for what’s to come—including a dream trip to New Zealand in February. It’s been a destination I’ve always wanted to visit, and as my 40th birthday present from my family, it feels like the perfect way to kick off the new year. As a lifelong fan of The Lord of the Rings and J.R.R. Tolkien, visiting the land of Middle-earth makes this trip extra special. I can’t wait to explore the breathtaking landscapes that inspired the films and immerse myself in the culture of this incredible place.

2024 feels like a year of stepping into the unknown and realizing that the risk was worth it. Every challenge, every change, every leap of faith—it all led to something better.

As we move into 2025, I’m carrying this momentum forward. I don’t know what’s ahead, but I’m ready to embrace it, just as I did this past year. Here’s to more adventures, more growth, and more moments that remind us why life is worth living.

How was your 2024? What changes did you make or adventures did you go on? I’d love to hear your reflections as we step into the new year together.

Embrace the adventure, cherish the moments, and I will catch you next year!

-Rob ❤️
