Leave No Trace: The Importance of Packing Out What You Pack In

Published by Rob Meush on

Hello Adventurers,

Today, I want to talk about a principle that’s close to my heart and crucial for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors: packing out what you pack in. Whether you’re camping, hiking, or backpacking in the backcountry, it’s essential to leave the environment as pristine as you found it—or better.

When we venture into nature, we enter a delicate ecosystem where every element plays a vital role. From the smallest insects to the towering trees, each part of the natural world contributes to the beauty and balance we all cherish. When we leave trash or any trace of our visit behind, we disrupt this balance, harm wildlife, and tarnish the experience for those who come after us.

Packing out what you pack in is a simple yet powerful way to respect and preserve our natural spaces. It means taking responsibility for all your waste, including food scraps, packaging, and any other materials you bring with you. By doing this, you ensure that the trails, campsites, and natural areas remain clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

I’ve seen firsthand the impact of not following this principle. Beautiful vistas marred by litter, wildlife harmed by ingesting or getting entangled in human waste, and once-pristine campsites turned into unsightly messes. It’s disheartening and entirely preventable.

Here are a few tips to make packing out what you pack in a seamless part of your outdoor adventures:

  1. Plan Ahead: Bring reusable containers and bags for your food and supplies. This reduces waste and makes it easier to pack everything back out.
  2. Carry a Trash Bag: Always have a designated bag for your trash. Keep it easily accessible so you can quickly stow away any waste as you go.
  3. Leave No Trace: Follow the Leave No Trace principles, which provide guidelines on minimizing your impact on the environment.
  4. Educate Others: Lead by example and share the importance of packing out what you pack in with your fellow adventurers. A collective effort makes a significant difference.
  5. Dispose of Waste Properly: When you return from your adventure, make sure to dispose of your waste in appropriate receptacles or recycling bins.
  6. Visit the Leave No Trace website for more information or their YouTube Channel!

By committing to these practices, we can all contribute to preserving the beauty and integrity of our natural spaces. The wilderness has given us so much—solitude, adventure, inspiration, and peace. It’s our responsibility to give back by protecting it.

Remember, the goal is to leave the wilderness better than we found it. Each piece of trash we pack out is a step toward a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Let’s honor the places that bring us joy by taking care of them, ensuring they remain wild and wonderful for generations to come.

As one of my favourite YouTube Channels (Destination Adventure) always signs off with, “Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints” Let’s remember to leave no trace.

As always, thanks for joining me on this journey. Remember, you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. Embrace the adventure, cherish the moments, and I’ll see you next time!
