Elk Lake Loop: An Almost Perfect Day Hike Experience

Published by Rob Meush on

Hello Readers!

Last weekend, I did a fantastic solo-hike around Elk Lake in Victoria, BC. This 10KM loop was the perfect way to spend a sunny day and get some good training in. I am trying to get my feet back up to hiking grade to be able to perform longer hikes but as I have lead a more sedentary life as of late, training is most certainly needed.

I set out a little late, around 9am, which made for a very warm hike towards the end. The lake wasn’t perfectly calm, but the bit of breeze was very welcome, and the sun was shining brightly, which made for a very beautiful hike.

The trail was bustling with activity, quite busy with many people out enjoying the day. On one side of the lake, there was a rowing competition going on at the rowing club, and on the other end, there was a fair of some sort happening (almost like a farmers market with other things? I am not sure exactly). This meant people, noise and excitement, everywhere along the trail.

Overall, I’d rate this trail a 7 out of 10. While it provided a great opportunity for training and the scenery was lovely, I prefer trails that are more secluded, away from the bustling noises of crowds and nearby highways. Still, it was a rewarding hike with plenty of beautiful views, a couple calm areas where there was almost no one and a good challenge for myself.

If you find yourself in Victoria, BC, and looking for a hike that combines natural beauty with a bit of local activity, the Elk Lake loop is worth exploring. It offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscapes, along with opportunities to see community events in action.

Until next time, happy hiking!
